PickupLock

How to make products pickup-only in Shopify

Pickup-only products should not offer normal shipping at checkout. The reliable approach is to apply the restriction to the product and let Shopify remove incompatible delivery options for the whole cart.

What “pickup-only” needs to do

A pickup-only rule is more than a message on the product page. It must also change the delivery options Shopify presents when the cart contains that product. Otherwise a customer can still select shipping even when the storefront says collection is required.

For mixed carts, the safest rule is a restrictive intersection: every delivery method shown must be valid for every restricted product in the cart. If one item is pickup-only, normal shipping should disappear for the entire checkout unless you intentionally split fulfillment outside PickupLock.

Set up a manual pickup-only rule

  1. Open PickupLock in Shopify Admin and go to Product Rules.
  2. Select one or more products that customers must collect.
  3. Choose the pickup-only restriction and save the rule.
  4. Open Simulator and test the product alongside a normal product.
  5. Confirm that pickup remains available and shipping is listed as hidden.
Important: PickupLock hides delivery methods you already configured in Shopify. It does not create pickup locations, shipping rates, or delivery zones.

Automate pickup-only rules for a product group

Manually selecting products is appropriate for a small, stable set. For a growing catalog, a Pro dynamic rule can use a Shopify collection, product tag, vendor, or product type. A rule such as Collection = Frozen → pickup only also covers future products that join that collection.

Automated collections deserve a real lifecycle test. Change the product data that controls membership, wait for Shopify to update the collection, and then verify both addition and removal in PickupLock coverage.

Tell customers before checkout

Enable the optional Cart Warning in the theme editor so customers see a clear message while still in the cart. The warning is helpful context; the Shopify delivery customization remains responsible for the checkout restriction.

Test the complete journey

  • Pickup-only product by itself.
  • Pickup-only product plus a normal product.
  • Pickup-only product plus another restricted product.
  • Cart page and accelerated checkout paths used by your theme.
  • Relevant destination countries if the rule is country-specific.

Finish with Setup Health. It identifies common configuration problems such as a disabled delivery customization, missing Cart Warning block, stale dynamic synchronization, or a deleted resource.
